At Least Every 12 Months

Annual & Comprehensive Crane Inspections

A good inspection goes considerably deeper than walking around the crane looking for an oil leak.

For construction cranes covered by OSHA 1926 Subpart CC, the annual/comprehensive inspection is required at least every 12 months and must be performed by a qualified person. The inspection includes functional testing and, where necessary, enough disassembly to complete the inspection.

For cranes operating under other rules or applications, inspection intervals and requirements can differ. OSHA's general-industry rules, for example, distinguish between frequent and periodic inspections based on service conditions and manufacturer recommendations.

We inspect the crane that is actually in front of us, not a generic checklist pretending every machine is the same.

A Closer Look

NDT: Nondestructive Testing

Not every problem can be evaluated adequately with your eyes.

Mondak provides nondestructive testing with a qualified third-party NDT provider for applicable crane components when the condition of the machine, previous repair, damage, service history or inspection findings call for a closer look.

The actual NDT is performed by a qualified third-party NDT provider, and we work together to complete the inspection process.

NDT may be used to evaluate areas such as:

  • Boom components
  • Structural welds
  • High-stress areas
  • Suspected cracks
  • Hooks
  • Pins
  • Shafts
  • Load-bearing components
  • Previously repaired areas
  • Components involved in overload or damage
  • Other critical components as required

The purpose is to evaluate the component for discontinuities without destroying it in the process.

Access Is the Bigger Part

NDT Sometimes Means Taking Things Apart

A proper NDT inspection is not always a quick test on an assembled crane.

Depending on the component and inspection method, the job may require:

  • Component removal
  • Disassembly
  • Cleaning
  • Paint or coating removal
  • Surface preparation
  • NDT inspection
  • Documentation
  • Reassembly
  • Follow-up repair or additional evaluation

That is why the cost and scope of NDT can vary considerably from one crane to another.

The test itself may be only one part of the job. Getting proper access to the component can be the bigger part.

Matched to the Machine

Load & Proof Testing

Mondak also performs crane load and proof testing when required or appropriate for the crane, repair, modification or inspection being performed.

Depending on the application, testing can be used to verify operation of systems such as:

Load testing is not something we treat as simply hanging an arbitrary weight from the hook.

The test needs to match the crane, its configuration, rated capacity, applicable procedure and reason the test is being performed.

For applicable general-industry crawler, truck and wheel-mounted cranes, OSHA places specific limits and requirements on rated-load testing and repairs or alterations.

The purpose of testing is to verify the machine under the conditions the required procedure calls for.

After a Repair or Modification

Some repairs affect parts of the crane directly related to safe operation.

That may include work involving:

  • Critical operating mechanisms

For construction cranes, repairs or adjustments that relate to safe operation require inspection by a qualified person before return to use, including functional testing of the repaired or adjusted parts and other components that may have been affected.

Depending on what was repaired, additional NDT, load testing, manufacturer criteria or engineering involvement may also be appropriate.

The Load Path

Wire Rope, Sheaves, Hooks & Hoisting Components

The load path deserves its own attention.

We inspect applicable components such as:

  • Wire rope
  • End connections
  • Reeving
  • Sheaves
  • Drums
  • Hooks
  • Hook blocks
  • Bearings
  • Winches
  • Hoist brakes
  • Holding mechanisms

We look for more than whether the rope is still physically attached.

Wear, deformation, corrosion, broken wires, damaged reeving components and problems at connections all matter.

Not Visible From Outside

Hydraulic System Inspection

Cranes depend heavily on hydraulics, and not every hydraulic problem is visible from outside the machine.

Mondak can evaluate conditions involving:

OSHA's construction-crane comprehensive inspection criteria specifically address hydraulic and pneumatic components, leaks, relief-valve operation and cylinder drift, rods, seals and connecting joints.

That aligns well with what Mondak already does every day in hydraulic troubleshooting.

Past the Display

LMI, RCL & Electronic Safety Systems

Modern crane inspections also involve electronics.

Depending on the crane, we can evaluate and troubleshoot systems involving:

A warning on the display tells us the system sees something it does not like.

It does not automatically tell us which component failed.

Mondak's diagnostic capabilities allow us to follow those problems beyond the display.

Mixed Systems

Large & International Cranes

Large cranes working in the United States may combine systems and components from several manufacturers.

A Liebherr, Tadano/Demag, Kobelco, SANY, Zoomlion or other international machine may combine:

  • Manufacturer-specific crane electronics
  • CAN communication
  • Electronic engine controls
  • Hydraulic systems from major component manufacturers
  • Load-monitoring electronics
  • Proprietary sensors
  • Unusual diagnostic connections

Mondak has OEM diagnostic software, NEXIQ communication equipment, multi-pin diagnostic capability, ECM programming equipment and direct/bench electronic diagnostic capabilities.

An international brand or unusual diagnostic connector does not automatically stop the troubleshooting process.

Inspection and Repair

Inspection and Repair Under One Roof

This is one of the biggest advantages of having Mondak inspect the crane.

If we find a problem, the process does not necessarily have to stop with an inspection report.

Depending on the finding, Mondak can handle:

A worn bore may need machining.

A drifting cylinder may need rebuilding.

An LMI fault may need electrical diagnosis.

A structural finding may need NDT and further evaluation.

We can follow the problem instead of simply identifying it.

Not Another Welding Job

Structural Repairs Are Treated Differently

Cracked booms, damaged structural members, deformation and critical weld repairs are not treated like ordinary equipment repairs.

Where manufacturer criteria, engineering, NDT or specific return-to-service testing is required, those requirements need to be part of the repair.

ASME B30.5 specifically addresses inspection, testing, maintenance and operation for applicable mobile and locomotive cranes and is one of the standards that can apply alongside regulatory and manufacturer requirements.

We would rather handle a structural concern correctly than pretend every crack is simply another welding job.
