What the Controller Sees

A Fault Code Is a Starting Point. Not Always the Answer.

Modern trucks are good at telling you what the controller sees.

They do not always tell you why it sees it.

A sensor fault may be the sensor, or it may be wiring, a connector, poor ground, voltage problem, communication fault or another condition somewhere else in the system.

The goal is not to clear the code. The goal is to fix what caused it.

ECM Programming & Module Replacement

Sometimes diagnosis ends with a controller that actually does need to be replaced.

Mondak has equipment for ECM and electronic control module programming, allowing us to handle more of the job in-house instead of stopping after the failed module is identified.

Build the Connection

When the Normal Diagnostic Connector Isn't Enough

Not every truck or piece of equipment arrives with a standard connector that matches the adapter in the diagnostic kit.

Older, imported, specialized and modified equipment can use unusual connectors, or may not have a usable diagnostic connector at all.

Mondak has a multi-pin diagnostic setup that allows us to build the appropriate connection for applicable equipment when a dedicated adapter is not available.

That can be useful on:

  • Older equipment
  • Imported equipment
  • Specialized machinery
  • Industrial engines
  • Uncommon diagnostic connectors
  • Damaged diagnostic ports
  • Standalone engines and power units
  • Controllers removed from the machine
  • Custom or modified equipment

Using the correct wiring information and pinout, we can connect the communication circuits required by the application, including systems such as:

  • Power and ground
  • CAN High / CAN Low
  • J1939
  • J1708 / J1587 where applicable
  • K-Line and other supported communication circuits

An unusual connector does not automatically end the diagnostic process.

Deeper Than the Diagnostic Port

Direct ECU & Bench Communication

Sometimes the machine cannot communicate with the controller normally at all.

A failed, damaged or corrupted ECU may prevent communication through the vehicle diagnostic connector.

When applicable, Mondak can use equipment including Dimsport New Trasdata, New Genius, NEXIQ and bench communication equipment to access the controller another way.

That may allow us to work directly with the ECU for diagnosis, programming, information transfer or recovery where supported.

Sometimes fixing the electronics means getting deeper than the diagnostic port.

Mondak uses NEXIQ heavy-duty communication interfaces with our diagnostic software.

These interfaces allow our service computers and OEM software to communicate with applicable:

Mack & Volvo Diagnostics

For applicable Mack and Volvo platforms, Mondak uses Premium Tech Tool.

That gives us manufacturer-specific diagnostic access for systems involving:

  • Parameters and calibrations
  • Applicable programming functions

A generic scanner may show the code.

OEM software can often show us considerably more about what the truck is actually doing.

Mondak uses Detroit DiagnosticLink for applicable Detroit and Daimler Truck systems commonly found in:

  • Detroit-powered vocational equipment

That gives us manufacturer-specific access when troubleshooting engine, electrical, aftertreatment and communication problems.

DAVIE4

Peterbilt, Kenworth & PACCAR

For applicable PACCAR systems, Mondak has DAVIE4 diagnostic capability.

That is especially useful on:

  • Kenworth
  • PACCAR MX-powered equipment

When a truck has an engine, aftertreatment or electronic problem, we can work deeper than basic generic fault-code information.

Five Platforms, One Brand

International / Navistar

International trucks can require different diagnostic platforms depending on model, generation and system.

Mondak has tools including:

This becomes especially valuable on vocational trucks where chassis electronics and the equipment mounted on the truck need to work together.

INSITE and DOC

Cummins & Allison

For applicable Cummins engines, Mondak uses Cummins INSITE for diagnostics, electronic testing, parameters and supported programming functions.

For Allison-equipped trucks and equipment, we use Allison DOC for applicable transmission diagnostics and electronic control work.

That means an engine or transmission complaint does not have to stop at a generic code description.

Brakes and Chassis Electronics

Bendix & WABCO

Truck electronics extend well beyond the engine and transmission.

Mondak also has diagnostic capability for electronic brake and chassis systems using platforms including:

  • Bendix ACom
  • WABCO TOOLBOX / TOOLBOX PLUS

That can include problems involving:

  • ABS
  • Wheel-speed sensors
  • Stability-control systems
  • Electronic braking controls

Sometimes a brake warning is mechanical.

Sometimes it is electrical.

Sometimes it is both.

Imported Machines

Scania & European Equipment Diagnostics

Mondak's diagnostic capability is not limited to the typical North American truck brands.

We also have Scania SDP3 capability for applicable Scania-powered equipment, along with additional diagnostic tools for specialized and European equipment.

That matters when an imported machine arrives with an electronic system a generic heavy-duty scan tool cannot fully access.

Not Every Problem Needs a Laptop

Not every electrical problem needs a laptop.

Modern trucks can have multiple controllers sharing information across the vehicle network:

When network communication breaks down, one problem can produce a long list of unrelated-looking faults.

A controller that disappears from the network is not automatically a failed controller.

Where the Two Meet

Vocational Trucks Add Another Layer

A service truck, bucket truck, crane truck or hydraulic work truck often has considerably more electronics than the chassis left the factory with.

That can include:

  • PTO controls
  • Hydraulic pump controls
  • Solenoid valves
  • Remote controls
  • Outriggers and stabilizers
  • Aerial controls
  • Crane controls
  • Service-body wiring
  • Auxiliary power
  • Safety interlocks
  • Added controllers

The truck manufacturer may have built one part of the system.

The equipment manufacturer built another.

Mondak is comfortable troubleshooting where the two meet.

The Command That Never Arrives

When Electrical Looks Hydraulic

A hydraulic function that will not move is not necessarily a hydraulic failure.

The valve may never be receiving a command.

A proportional solenoid may have the wrong signal.

An interlock may be preventing operation.

A PTO may not engage because the truck does not see the correct transmission, brake or engine condition.

That is where being able to work across electrical, electronic, hydraulic and mechanical systems matters.
