Slow or Weak Does Not Automatically Mean a Pump
A telehandler that lifts slowly may have a worn hydraulic pump.
It may also have:
- Internal leakage
- Cylinder bypass
- A valve problem
- Relief or pressure-control issue
- Load-sense problem
- Restricted suction
- Excessive hydraulic temperature
- Electronic control problem
- Incorrect command to a proportional valve
And if the machine only gets weak after it warms up, that matters.
We would rather test pressure, flow and what the controls are commanding than replace the most expensive component first.
Boom, Carriage & Mechanical Wear
Hydraulics can create the force, but the boom still has to move mechanically the way it was designed to.
We look at problems involving:
- Boom sections
- Wear pads
- Extend and retract systems
- Chains or cables where equipped
- Rollers and guides
- Pins and bushings
- Cylinder pins and mounts
- Carriage components
- Quick-attach systems
- Fork carriages
- Attachment hydraulics
Wear, looseness or misalignment can create problems that look hydraulic at first.
A leaking cylinder may need repair.
A cylinder repeatedly failing because the mounting points are worn needs more than another seal kit.
Steering, Frame Level & Travel Problems
Telehandlers combine lifting equipment with a rough-terrain drivetrain.
We troubleshoot:
- Two-wheel steering
- Four-wheel steering
- Crab steering
- Steering alignment problems
- Frame leveling
- Travel problems
- Powershift transmissions
- Hydrostatic drive systems
- Axles and differentials
- Brakes
- Drive controls
On electronically controlled machines, a function that refuses to operate may also involve a sensor, switch, solenoid, controller or interlock rather than the hydraulic or mechanical component itself.
Electrical & Electronic Diagnostics
Newer telehandlers use electronics to manage functions that were much simpler on older machines.
Depending on the machine, we can troubleshoot:
- Fault codes
- Live data
- Joystick inputs
- Proportional valve commands
- Boom position sensors
- Angle sensors
- Steering sensors
- Solenoids
- Engine electronics
- Transmission controls
- CAN communication
- Safety interlocks
- Controller power and grounds
- Wiring and connectors
Current SkyTrak machines, for example, use advanced electronic controls and onboard diagnostics, while Genie GTH machines use proportional joystick and frame-leveling control systems on applicable models.
A fault code gives us somewhere to look. It does not automatically tell us which part to order.
When the Diagnostic Connector Is the Problem
Older, imported and specialized equipment does not always have a convenient standard diagnostic connection.
Mondak has OEM diagnostic software, NEXIQ communication equipment and a multi-pin diagnostic setup that can allow us to make the appropriate connection on supported equipment when the normal adapter is not available.
We also have direct and bench-level electronic diagnostic and programming capabilities for situations where normal machine communication is not enough.
That becomes useful on equipment that is:
- Older
- Imported
- Modified
- Using an uncommon connector
- Missing or has a damaged diagnostic port
- Equipped with a standalone engine or controller
The lack of the usual connector does not automatically stop the diagnostic process.
Older Telehandlers Still Deserve a Real Repair Option
Lull and older SkyTrak, Genie, Manitou and other telehandlers can still be productive machines even when parts support becomes more difficult.
If an original component is obsolete or unavailable, Mondak can look at options such as:
- Repairing the existing component
- Rebuilding a hydraulic component
- Cross-referencing a replacement
- Adapting hydraulic fittings or plumbing
- Repairing wiring or controls
- Machining a part
- Repairing worn bores
- Making pins or bushings
- Fabricating a bracket or mount
- Updating a component where practical
A discontinued part number does not automatically mean the machine is finished.
Field Service Makes Sense for Telehandlers
A telehandler sitting on a construction site, industrial facility or farm does not always need to be hauled to a shop before diagnosis starts.
