Manitou M40-4T No-Crank in Sidney, Montana: From Breakdown Call to Running Again That Evening
When a forklift won't crank, the real problem is the work waiting on it.
At about 5:00 PM Central Time, a customer in Sidney, Montana called Mondak Equipment about a Manitou M40-4T that would not start. It was already about 4:00 PM Mountain Time at their location, and our technician had roughly a 45-minute drive ahead of him.
Within 8 minutes of the call, the service request was created and dispatched through our Tinnacity field service system, and the technician was on the road.
By roughly 6:30 PM Central, the problem had been found and the Manitou was running again.
The failure wasn't the starter.
It was a tiny switch buried inside the forward-neutral-reverse control.
The Complaint Was Simple: It Wouldn't Crank
A no-crank condition can come from a dozen places, so guessing gets expensive quickly.
The technician started at the battery and starter.
Battery voltage was 12.3 volts, and battery voltage was present at the starter's main power lug.
But when the key was turned to START, the starter solenoid wire had no voltage.
That told us the starter wasn't necessarily bad.
It simply wasn't receiving the command to crank.
The next step was to find out where that command was getting lost.
Follow the Power, Not the Assumption
The switch panel was removed and the key switch tested.
Power was present at the ignition switch, and the START terminal produced voltage when the key was actuated.
So the start command was leaving the key switch.
It just wasn't reaching the starter.
That narrowed the problem down to the controls and safety interlocks between the two.
The steering-column trim was removed to access the forward-neutral-reverse, or FNR, lever.
Using the wiring diagram, the technician checked the two micro switches used in the starting interlock.
The forward switch worked correctly.
The reverse micro switch was sticking and wasn't returning to its normal position.
That was enough to interrupt the starter-enable circuit and shut the whole machine down.
A several-thousand-pound forklift sidelined by a switch you could hold between two fingers.
A Temporary Solution Got the Customer Moving
Using a pick, the technician carefully freed the sticking switch and worked it until it began operating normally again.
Once the switch returned correctly, the starter circuit was restored.
The Manitou cranked.
The engine started.
And the customer could use the machine again.
We weren't going to pretend a sticking safety switch was permanently repaired, though. The correct replacement still needed to be installed.
So the goal:
Keep the machine working now and get the right part coming.
The customer was shown how to free the switch if it stuck again before the replacement arrived, and we left a spare pick onsite for that purpose.
Finding the Right Part After Hours
This particular repair also shows why having a strong parts network matters.
There are a lot of different FNR levers, micro-switch arrangements, part-number changes, and machine configurations across forklifts and telehandlers.
We did not have this exact one sitting on the shelf at our Williston shop.
And by the time we knew exactly what we needed, it was already around 6:30 PM Central Time.
That didn't mean waiting until the next morning to start looking.
Through Mondak Equipment's supplier network, we were able to source the correct replacement and arrange to have it at our Williston shop Thursday morning.
The customer called late Tuesday afternoon.
That evening, the machine was usable again.
And the correct part was already on its way.
Why Diagnosis Matters
It would have been easy to hear "won't crank" and start with a starter.
But a new starter would not have fixed this machine.
The starter had battery power.
The key switch was working.
The failure was in the control circuit between them.
That is the difference between changing a suspected part and actually finding the problem.
For the customer, it means less wasted time, fewer unnecessary parts, and a faster path back to work.
One More Problem Caught Before We Left
Once the Manitou was running, the technician also noticed that the engine belt was squealing loudly.
The customer asked us to inspect it and replace it if it is nearing the end of its life.
That may not have been the reason for the service call, but catching it now is better than waiting for it to become the next breakdown.
Field Service Should Make Equipment Problems Easier
When a machine goes down, the customer shouldn't have to figure out whether the problem is a starter, relay, safety switch, controller, or wiring harness.
