Railmover & Locomotive Repair
We provide field and shop repair across the diesel, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and electronic systems used in industrial rail equipment.
Keep the Rail Operation Moving
When a railmover or switcher goes down, the problem can quickly affect loading, unloading and everything waiting on the next railcar move.
You already know the machine is not doing its job.
Mondak's job is to find out why and get it moving again.
Rail Equipment We Work On
Mondak works on:
- Railcar movers
- Road/rail railmovers
- Yard switchers
- Industrial locomotives
- Switching locomotives
- Locomotive support equipment
Common railmover brands include:
- Trackmobile
- RailKing
- Shuttlewagon and more
Common yard and industrial switchers can include:
- EMD SW-Series
- MP15-Series
- GP7
- GP9
- GP10
- GP15
- GP38 / GP38-2
- GE industrial switchers
- ALCO S-Series
- NRE genset locomotives and more
Repair Across the Machine
We troubleshoot and repair problems involving:
- Diesel engines
- Transmissions and drivetrains
- Hydraulic systems
- Air and brake systems
- Rail gear
- Couplers
- Electrical systems
- Sensors and controls
- CAN/J1939 communication
- Starting and charging
- Cooling and fuel systems
- Older and modified equipment
A machine that has lost pulling power does not automatically have an engine problem.
A locomotive that will not move may have plenty of engine power but a problem somewhere else in the traction, control, brake or electrical system.
We diagnose the system before deciding which component to blame.
Older Equipment Is Normal in Rail Work
Rail equipment can stay productive for decades.
That means the machine in front of us may have been repowered, rewired, modified or updated several times since it was built.
Mondak is comfortable working with older and modified equipment, including situations where components are obsolete or no longer match the original configuration.
Depending on the problem, we may repair, rebuild, cross-reference, machine, fabricate or adapt a practical solution.
Field Service Where the Equipment Sits
Railmovers and locomotives usually make more sense to diagnose where they are.
Mondak provides mobile rail-equipment diagnostics and repair, with shop support for engines, pumps, cylinders, transmissions, machining and larger component repairs.
The machine does not always have to come to us.
Engine, generator, controls, traction motors
The engine provides the mechanical power, but that power is converted into electricity and then used to drive the locomotive's traction motors. Replacing parts without understanding the entire system can get expensive fast.
Mondak has the diagnostic tools and the electrical and mechanical expertise to troubleshoot diesel-electric systems from the engine through the traction system. Our technicians know a locomotive can have an engine that runs correctly and still have a traction or power problem, so we work through the whole power path, from the diesel engine to the generator or alternator, through the electrical control system to traction power, the traction motors and the final drive. That lets us tell an engine problem from a generation, control or traction-side problem before major components are replaced.
Across the diesel-electric power path
- Diesel engine performance, controls and electronic systems
- Generator and alternator systems
- Main electrical and traction power systems
- Traction motors and final drive
- Electrical control systems, wiring, sensors, relays and contactors
- Battery, charging and starting systems
- Cooling systems
- Fault codes, alarms, loss of traction, reduced power and intermittent faults
Rail equipment as a complete machine
Diesel-electric locomotives and railmovers often need diagnostic equipment designed for their control systems. Mondak uses specialized rail diagnostic tools and software to communicate with locomotive and rail equipment systems, retrieve fault information, monitor parameters and troubleshoot electronic and electrical problems.
With the mechanical and hydraulic work in the same shop, we can treat rail equipment as one machine instead of a stack of separate systems.
See All Repair ServicesElectrical problems do not always mean an electrical repair
A locomotive that loses power, will not move, overheats or throws a fault code may have a problem anywhere in the system. We diagnose before we recommend repair, then decide the repair:
- Component repair or replacement
- Wiring and connection repair
- Control-system troubleshooting
- Traction motor service
- Generator or alternator repair
- Engine, transmission, gearbox or final-drive repair
- System calibration and adjustment
Answers for this service
What makes rail equipment different from normal heavy equipment?
Rail equipment can combine diesel engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, electrical controls and specialized air and braking systems.
Technicians need to understand how those systems interact rather than treating the machine like a conventional off-road vehicle.
What rail equipment does Mondak service?
We service locomotives, rail movers and equipment such as Trackmobile, RailKing and Shuttlewagon, along with supported systems and components.
Can Mondak work on diesel-electric locomotives?
Diesel-electric equipment requires both engine and electrical expertise. The diesel engine produces power that is converted and controlled through an electrical system to drive the equipment.
Mondak can troubleshoot supported diesel-electric systems using electrical and diagnostic testing.
Can you repair locomotive air systems?
We can work on supported air systems, including air controls, piping, lines and brake-related components.
What is a Blue Card inspection?
A Blue Card is associated with inspection and documentation requirements for certain rail equipment. The applicable requirements depend on the type of equipment, its use and the governing railroad or regulatory requirements.
Mondak evaluates the equipment against the requirements applicable to the specific inspection.
Tell Us What It Is Doing
Whether it is a Trackmobile, RailKing, Shuttlewagon or yard switcher, you do not need to diagnose it before calling.
Give us the manufacturer, model, location and what the machine is doing. We'll start there.
