The basic job of a rig has not changed much over the years. It still has to lift the load, control the pipe, provide the power and reliably perform the work at the well.
The technology used to do that has changed considerably.
Some rigs we see have been working for decades. Others are relatively new. Many fall somewhere in between, older iron that has been repowered, modified and upgraded several times during its working life.
That mix of old and new technology can make troubleshooting challenging.

A manufacturer name helps identify the equipment, but it does not determine whether Mondak can work on it.

Old Iron Meets New Technology
A rig does not have to be new to have modern technology on it.
It is common to find an older rig that has been repowered with an electronically controlled engine, had the transmission changed, received updated controls or had hydraulic components replaced with newer designs.
That can leave a machine with decades of mechanical history and newer electronic technology operating together on the same rig.
Today's workover rig may include:

Understanding the fault code is sometimes only the beginning.
A data-link fault does not automatically mean a module is bad. An engine derate can show up as poor hydraulic performance. A sensor or electrical problem can prevent a hydraulic function even when the hydraulic components themselves are working correctly.
Mondak works through the systems to find out what is actually causing the problem.
Drilling Rig Repair
Mondak also provides troubleshooting and repair for drilling rigs and drilling-related equipment.

Drilling rigs can bring together diesel power, transmissions, drawworks, hydraulic systems, rotary equipment, electrical systems and controls in one package.
When the equipment goes down, the problem does not always stay neatly inside one system.
An engine problem can affect hydraulic output. An electrical fault can prevent a mechanical or hydraulic function. Excessive load or mechanical resistance can create symptoms that look like a hydraulic problem.
Mondak approaches the rig as a complete machine rather than assuming the component showing the symptom is automatically the component that failed.
Snubbing Unit Repair
Snubbing units rely heavily on hydraulic power and controlled movement.
When a snubbing unit is operating slowly, losing a function, overheating or behaving inconsistently, the problem may involve the hydraulic system, controls, power source or mechanical equipment.
Mondak can troubleshoot and repair systems including:

Coil Tubing Unit Repair
Mondak provides repair and troubleshooting for coil tubing units and supporting equipment as well.
Coil tubing equipment combines high-capacity hydraulics, engines or electric power, controls, cooling and specialized mechanical equipment.
A performance problem may originate in the injector, reel or another piece of equipment, or it may start in the hydraulic power unit supplying everything.
Looking at the complete system helps prevent expensive components from being condemned before the actual problem is understood.

We Don't Start With a Parts List
A failed component needs to be repaired or replaced.
But finding the failed component and finding the cause of the failure are not always the same thing.
A hydraulic pump may fail because of contamination, cavitation or another problem elsewhere in the system.
A hose that repeatedly fails may have a routing, movement, heat or pressure problem.
An engine fault may reduce available hydraulic power.
A communication problem may originate in wiring rather than the electronic module reporting the fault.
Replacing parts without understanding those conditions can get expensive quickly.
Mondak's approach is to gather the information, test the equipment and determine why the machine is not doing what it is supposed to do before deciding what needs to be changed.
Older Equipment Doesn't Scare Us
A lot of oilfield equipment still earning money today was built decades ago.
That does not mean it is worn out, and it does not necessarily mean it cannot be repaired when an original component becomes obsolete.
When replacement parts are difficult to find, Mondak can look at the function the original component performs and determine what options are available.
Depending on the situation, that might include:
- Repairing or rebuilding the existing component
- Cross-referencing a modern replacement
- Adapting another manufacturer's component
- Updating part of the system
- Fabricating or machining what is needed
- Developing another practical repair
The goal is not to change equipment just for the sake of changing it.
The goal is to keep useful equipment working.
Field Service or Shop Repair
Not every rig problem requires the same approach.
Some failures can be diagnosed and repaired in the field. Others require more extensive disassembly, testing, machining, fabrication or component repair that makes more sense at the Mondak shop.
