Diesel & Electric HPU Repair for Oilfield Equipment

Sometimes the problem is obvious. Other times the HPU is running hotter than normal, losing pressure or flow, working fine cold and falling off when hot, or contaminating the hydraulic oil.

We can work through the HPU and the equipment it powers to determine what needs attention.

The Name on the Skid

Mondak works on hydraulic power units from manufacturers such as:

  • Other OEM and custom-built oilfield HPUs

We also see NOV / Varco HPU 35 units used with ST-series iron roughnecks and other equipment.

An HPU may have components from several different manufacturers, so the name on the skid does not limit what we can work on.

Normal Warm, or Changed?

Hydraulic Oil Running Hot?

Heat is one of the most common HPU issues we see.

Some units, including the NOV / Varco HPU 35, tend to operate on the warm side. The important question is whether the temperature is normal for that unit and operating condition, or whether something has changed.

High hydraulic oil temperature can come from:

  • Worn pumps or motors
  • Internal leakage
  • Relief or bypass flow
  • Dirty or restricted oil coolers
  • Cooling fan problems
  • Restricted filters
  • Suction problems
  • Incorrect or degraded hydraulic fluid
  • Contamination
  • Excessive system load

The answer is not always a bigger cooler or a new pump.

Mondak can look at pressure, flow, temperature, pump performance, cooling, filtration, fluid condition, and how the system behaves under load.

The goal is not to make the HPU run cold.

The goal is to determine whether it is running the way it should, and if it isn't, why.

One Failure Becomes Several

Hydraulic Contamination

Contamination can turn one component failure into several.

Dirt, water, metal, hose material, or debris from a failed pump or motor can travel through the hydraulic system and damage other components.

Mondak can help with:

  • Hydraulic oil inspection
  • Filter inspection and replacement
  • Reservoir cleaning
  • System flushing
  • Offline filtration
  • Oil replacement
  • Water contamination
  • Component-failure cleanup

Installing a new pump into a contaminated system can put the replacement right back into the same conditions that damaged the old one.

Sometimes replacing the failed component is only part of the repair.

RPM the Pumps Need

Diesel Engine-Driven HPUs

Many oilfield HPUs use diesel engines, including units powered by Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines and other diesel power packages.

Mondak can troubleshoot:

If the engine cannot maintain the power or RPM the hydraulic pumps need, the equipment being powered can look like it has a hydraulic problem.

That is why we may look at the engine and hydraulic system together.

Same Job, Different Power Source

Electric Hydraulic Power Units

Mondak also works on electric-driven HPUs.

Repair and troubleshooting can include:

  • Electric motors
  • Motor starters and controls
  • Electrical connections
  • Pump couplings
  • Hydraulic pumps
  • Valves and manifolds
  • Cooling systems
  • Sensors and controls
  • Pressure and flow problems

The power source changes.

The HPU still has to deliver the pressure and flow the equipment needs without creating excessive heat.

It Does Not Automatically Need a Pump

A system that will not build pressure does not automatically need a pump.

Internal leakage, a bypassing valve, restriction, engine problem, overheating, or another condition can create similar symptoms.

Finding the Part, Not the Fault

Sometimes You Already Know What Failed

Not every HPU problem requires extensive troubleshooting.

You may already know what you need: the problem is finding the part or finding someone willing to help with an older system.

Depending on the repair, Mondak can:

  • Cross-reference hydraulic components
  • Rebuild existing components
  • Adapt pumps or valves
  • Repair manifolds
  • Modify hydraulic plumbing
  • Machine parts
  • Fabricate mounts or brackets
  • Update controls
  • Replace obsolete components

An obsolete part number does not automatically make the HPU obsolete.

Supply and Demand

The HPU & the Equipment It Powers

Sometimes the HPU is blamed for a problem that is actually in the top drive, power swivel, iron roughneck, or catwalk.

Other times that equipment is showing symptoms caused by the HPU.

Mondak works on both sides.

That gives us the ability to look at what the HPU is supplying and what the equipment is actually demanding from it.

When to Call

Common HPU Problems

Call Mondak when your HPU is:

  • Running hotter than normal
  • Losing pressure or flow
  • Slowing down under load
  • Working fine cold but poorly when hot
  • Repeatedly plugging filters
  • Contaminating hydraulic oil
  • Making pump noise
  • Cavitating
  • Having cooling problems
  • Having diesel-engine or electric-motor problems
  • Repeatedly failing pumps or motors
  • Having valve or control problems

Sometimes you know exactly what failed.

Other times you just know the system is not performing the way it used to.

Either way, we can start there.

The HPU Stays, We Go

Field HPU Repair

Most oilfield HPUs are too large or too integrated into the equipment to simply load up and bring to a repair shop.

That is why field service is a major part of what Mondak does.

We can come to the equipment and troubleshoot the HPU where it is operating. That allows us to see the unit under real operating conditions and, when possible, evaluate the equipment it is powering at the same time.

Field repair can include:

  • Pressure and flow testing
  • Hydraulic temperature troubleshooting
  • Pump and motor diagnostics
  • Cooler and cooling-system checks
  • Filter and contamination issues
  • Valve and manifold repair
  • Hydraulic hose and hard-line repair
  • Diesel engine diagnostics
  • Electrical and control troubleshooting
  • Component replacement
  • System flushing and cleanup
  • On-site modifications and repairs when practical

Some individual components may still need to come back to the Mondak shop for rebuilding, machining, or more extensive repair.

But in most cases, the HPU itself stays in the field and Mondak goes to it.
