A DPF can reach a point where commanding another regeneration is not the answer.

The filter may be heavily soot-loaded. It may have accumulated ash over thousands of hours or miles. The DOC may be contaminated. Or the filter may keep plugging because something upstream is creating more soot than the system can manage.

We clean what can be cleaned, and look for the reason it needed cleaning in the first place.

Diesel Force DPF & DOC Cleaning

Diesel Force uses dedicated adapters and procedures for applicable DPF and DOC systems.

Its current application database includes separate DPF/DOC cleaning procedures and adapters for engines such as CAT C7, C13 and C15, along with extensive Cummins and other engine coverage.

Depending on the engine and condition, the Diesel Force process can address buildup through:

  • DOC
  • DPF
  • EGR circuit
  • EGR cooler
  • EGR valve
  • Induction system
  • Exhaust side of the VGT turbo
  • Differential-pressure sensor passages

That matters because the restriction at the DPF may be only one part of the problem.

One Burns, One Does Not

Soot and Ash Need Different Answers

This is one of the most important distinctions in DPF service.

Soot can be burned. Ash cannot.

Regeneration oxidizes combustible soot trapped in the filter.

Ash is the noncombustible material left behind over time from sources such as lubricant additives and engine wear. It gradually takes up space in the filter and increases restriction.

So the right answer depends on what is loading the filter.

Soot-loaded filter

The system may need:

  • Diagnosis
  • Regeneration
  • Diesel Force cleaning
  • Repair of the condition preventing normal regeneration

Ash-loaded filter

The filter may need:

  • Removal
  • Physical cleaning
  • Inspection
  • Replacement if it is no longer serviceable

Another regen does not remove accumulated ash.

Fast Plugging Is Not Normal

Why Did the Filter Load Up?

DPFs are supposed to collect particulate matter.

That does not mean repeated or unusually fast plugging should be treated as normal.

We look for conditions such as:

  • Failed or incomplete regeneration
  • Excessive idle time
  • Low exhaust temperature
  • Excessive soot production
  • Injector problems
  • Turbo or boost problems
  • EGR problems
  • VGT carbon buildup
  • Differential-pressure sensor faults
  • Exhaust-temperature sensor faults
  • Dosing problems
  • Oil consumption
  • Engine mechanical problems
  • Wiring or communication faults

Cleaning restores the filter.

Finding the cause helps keep it clean.

Before and After the Filter

Differential Pressure Matters

DPF restriction is commonly monitored by measuring pressure before and after the filter.

But a high-pressure reading does not automatically prove the filter itself is the only problem.

We also look at:

  • Differential-pressure sensor
  • Pressure tubes and ports
  • Wiring
  • Sensor plausibility
  • Exhaust leaks
  • Soot-loading information
  • Regeneration history

Diesel Force specifically includes cleaning of differential-pressure sensor ports as part of its emissions-system process.

Upstream of the Filter

DOC Cleaning & Performance

The DOC sits upstream of the DPF on many systems and plays an important role in aftertreatment operation.

If it becomes contaminated or is not functioning correctly, the system may have difficulty creating the exhaust conditions needed for effective regeneration.

That is why we do not treat the DPF as an isolated filter.

DOC condition, engine operation and DPF performance are connected.

Cycled, Not Idling

EGR & VGT Carbon Cleaning

Carbon buildup upstream can contribute to repeated emissions problems.

With the Diesel Force Electronic Component Controller, applicable EGR valves and variable-geometry turbo actuators can be cycled through their operating range during cleaning rather than remaining in the limited positions they normally occupy at idle.

That gives the cleaning process better access to areas where carbon can interfere with:

  • EGR movement
  • Airflow
  • Turbo vane movement
  • Boost
  • Exhaust temperature
  • Regeneration performance
Removal

When the Filter Comes Off

Some DPF and DOC problems require removal.

That can be the right direction when dealing with:

  • Heavy ash accumulation
  • Severe restriction
  • Contamination
  • Suspected substrate damage
  • Repeated cleaning problems
  • Filters due for scheduled service

Once removed, the condition of the filter matters.

We want to know whether it is a good candidate for cleaning or whether damage has reached the point where replacement makes more sense.

Money on the Wrong Part

Cleaning Does Not Fix a Damaged Filter

Not every DPF should be cleaned and put back into service.

A filter may have physical damage such as:

  • Cracked substrate
  • Melted substrate
  • Severe thermal damage
  • Internal deterioration
  • Oil or coolant contamination
  • Damage from excessive soot loading

High soot loads and uncontrolled regeneration temperatures can create thermal stress capable of cracking or melting filter material.

There is a point where cleaning a damaged filter is spending money on the wrong part.

  • Calculated soot load

  • Aftertreatment operating data

That information helps us determine whether the filter actually needs cleaning and whether the system is operating correctly when it goes back into service.

Scheduled, Not Emergency

Cleaning as Preventive Maintenance

DPF and emissions-system cleaning does not have to wait until the machine is derated.

Certain applications naturally create more soot and carbon buildup:

  • High idle hours
  • Low average speed
  • Short duty cycles
  • Light engine loading
  • Stop-and-go operation
  • Equipment that rarely stays hot for long periods

Diesel Force specifically designed the B1500-X for larger engines and severe-duty applications where those operating conditions contribute to heavy carbon buildup.

For the right fleet or equipment application, scheduled cleaning can become part of preventive maintenance rather than an emergency repair.

Clean the Filter. Fix the Reason.

If the filter is dirty, we can clean it.

If the EGR and VGT are carbon-loaded, Diesel Force gives us another way to address that buildup.

If the filter is ash-loaded, it needs the appropriate physical service.

And if a failed sensor, injector, turbo, doser or engine condition is causing the problem, that needs to be corrected too.
